Patients with infective endocarditis and history of injection drug use in a Swedish referral hospital during 10 years

Abstract Background Patients with injection drug use (IDU) have increased risk of developing infective endocarditis (IE). Previous studies reported recurrent IE, duration hospital stay, poor adherence and compliance as well higher mortality worse outcomes after surgery in the IDU-IE patient group. Further are needed to provide a basis for optimized care prevention readmissions this population. This study aims describe clinical characteristics among patients IDU-IE. Methods Data adults non-IDU-IE, treated between 2008 2017 at Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm were obtained from Swedish National Registry Infective Endocarditis. Clinical characteristics, microbiological results, treatment durations, results echocardiography in-hospital compared groups. Results Of total 522 patients, 165 (32%) had younger than non-IDU-IE (mean age IDU-IE: 41.6 years, SD 11.9 years; non-IDU-IE: 64.3 16.4 P < 0.01). No difference distribution gender was observed, 33% females both History previous IE (IDU-IE: n = 49, 30%; 34, 10%; 0.01) vascular phenomena 101, 61%; 120, 34%; more common while prosthetic heart valves 12, 7%; 83, 23%; known valvular disease 3, 2%; 78, 22%; non-IDU-IE. Aetiology Staphylococcus aureus 123, 75%; 118, 33%; tricuspid 91, 55%; 23, 6%; or pulmonary valve vegetations 7, 4%; 2, 1%; The overall incidence decreased during period, definite ( Conclusions presents that younger, less frequently prevalence history aspects important improved management
